First Grade Poets

Our poetry unit has finally come to an end. What a great couple weeks of writing we had. The kids loved being able to write about anything and everything! Here are a couple of our favorites.

The Coral Reef - by Zachary
Splish splash fish coming
Fresh new fish ready to eat
Yuuuuuuummmmyyyy.
Lets go back to the coral reef

So many fish ready to eat.


Birds - by Carter
Blue and red. Brown and black
Big or small. Skinny of fat.
Can fly up high
in the sky.
Never in a hurry.


Frogs Hide and Seek - by Cameron
Ribit, ribit, ribit, ribit! Hoping fast.
Where are they? They are good at hiding.
Hoping fast to a hiding spot.

I think they are right behind me - are they?

Bows are ribbon
I tie in my hair
That look beautiful everywhere.

HELP US MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

As you know, this year Chets Creek will be hosting the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event on May 1stand 2nd! To get our kids involved in making a difference, we are holding a COIN COLLECTION DRIVE at our school. Starting today, we will be collecting coins in our classroom. Students can bring in spare change to donate to cancer. You can help them earn change by letting them do chores around the house, by doing extra reading, and more! Students will also have a chance to earn change to put in our jug through positive behavior in our classroom. The coin drive will go until Friday, April 24th. Last year, we raised almost $3,000, so let’s do it again! As always, thank you for your support!

Persuasive Writing

This week we finished our Persuasive Writing Unit. The kids really enjoyed writing about things they were passionate about. They sent letters to many different people: the principal, the president, the governor, and even us. We loved our letters (and may even considerer some of them). Here is a glipse into some of the letters we received.

Dear Mrs. Harbour,
I want more lunch time. I never get to finish my lunch. It's not fair. We only have a little bit of time. Can we have silent lunch because if I try to eat my food then in a minute people start to talk to me. That why I never get to finish my lunch.

Dear Mrs. Harbour and Mrs. VanAlstyne,
I think we need to eat in the classroom! Because it won't be that loud. You can watch us when we eat! We would know not to yell. But we would have to remember to get everything. And we would probably win a bear every day! We won't have to wait to put are trash away. We wouldn't get bad compliments about our behavior! Remember that time when we ate in the classroom - it was really really fun.

Can we have longer recess? Because I don't get to play with my friends a lot. And when I play a game I don't get to finish. And I really like to play tag outside a lot. Remember when we had a short recess? I didn't get to play with my friends a long time.

I think we need more boys because I think that it is not fair that we have more girls then boys. When I was in Mrs. Meissner's class we had more boys than girls. That is why we had more friends of boys.

Can we have longer recess. I think the class really needs longer recess. Because when we have P.E. we only get 10 minutes outside and if we bring our snacks out we don't have time to play. If we flip our cards we get to sit in time out and don't have all the time to play. Sometimes when we have longer recess we behave.

Spring Celebrations

On Friday we had our annual Egg Hunt and Spring Celebration. We had lots of fun activities throughout the day and ended it with our science unit on plants by planting different types of flowers. We will watch them over the next couple weeks and see how they grow and change. Here are some highlights of our day!

Welcome Back

Like all of you, I was ready for Spring Break to come. I have so much I wanted to get posted before I left and didn't have time to. Check back this week to see some great writing that we have done.

I hope that everyone had a safe and wonderful break. We enjoyed our ski trip to Colorado as well. I can't wait to hear all about your family trips from the kids.

We are in the last 9 weeks of the year. Make sure you are reading all important information being sent through the planner. It will pass quickly and there will be a lot of dates you won't want to miss.
